Thelma & Louise 35th Anniversary Screening
Thelma & Louise Returns to Cambridge Film Festival 35 Years On
Monday 13 July, 6 pm, Arts Picturehouse
The Cambridge Film Festival is delighted to present a special anniversary screening of Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise, 35 years to the week since the film premiered at the 15th Cambridge Film Festival in 1991.
Bold, funny, thrilling and deeply moving, Thelma & Louise remains one of the defining films of the 1990s: a landmark road movie about friendship, freedom and rebellion that still feels urgent on the big screen.
Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri, the film stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as Louise and Thelma, two friends whose weekend escape becomes a defiant journey across America. What begins as a break from everyday life turns into one of cinema’s most unforgettable stories of resistance, solidarity and self-determination.
The film went on to become a major critical success, earning multiple Academy Award nominations and winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Callie Khouri. With unforgettable performances from Sarandon and Davis, alongside Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen and Brad Pitt in an early breakout role, Thelma & Louise has lost none of its power to move, provoke and entertain.
A special place in CFF history
In 1991, the 15th Cambridge Film Festival screened premieres of Thelma & Louise and the Coen Brothers’ Barton Fink, placing Ridley Scott’s now-iconic film within a long Festival tradition of bringing bold, influential cinema to Cambridge audiences.
Now, 35 years later, we are bringing Thelma & Louise back to Cambridge for a one-night-only anniversary screening at the Arts Picturehouse.
