CFF45 Big Birthday Film Quiz launches our Sapphire year in style

The Cambridge Film Festival’s 45th anniversary celebrations got off to a brilliant start with the CFF45 Big Birthday Film Quiz at Cambridge Junction.

Held on Thursday 4th June, the evening brought together film fans, Festival supporters, friends, volunteers and teams from across Cambridge for a night of film trivia, friendly rivalry and plenty of good humour. From silent cinema and Hollywood classics to cult favourites, international cinema and recent releases, the quiz celebrated the breadth of film culture that has shaped Cambridge Film Festival over the last 45 editions.

The event marked the first major celebration in CFF45’s Sapphire anniversary year, which will continue with more screenings, special events and Festival activity in the months ahead.

A packed evening of film, fun and fundraising

Teams took on a wide-ranging set of quiz rounds, testing their knowledge of actors, directors, soundtracks, posters, movie moments and Festival favourites. There was strong competition throughout the evening, with Team Jake eventually taking the top spot.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, bought tickets, took part in the raffle, donated prizes, volunteered on the night or helped spread the word. Together, the evening raised several hundred pounds in support of Cambridge Film Trust’s charitable work.

Funds raised through the quiz will help support the work of Cambridge Film Trust, the charity behind Cambridge Film Festival. This includes our free education programmes, Youth Lab, community screenings, opportunities for young people and emerging talent, and our wider year-round work to make film culture more open, welcoming and accessible.

Celebrating 45 editions of the Cambridge Film Festival

The first Cambridge Film Festival took place in 1977 at the old Arts Cinema in Market Passage. Forty-five editions later, CFF remains a major part of the city’s cultural life, bringing audiences together around bold new cinema, international filmmaking, rediscovered classics, special guests, industry events, education programmes and community activity.

The Big Birthday Film Quiz was a chance to celebrate that history in the best possible way: with people in a room, sharing their love of cinema, arguing over answers, laughing at the ones they missed, and helping to support the future of the Festival.

Owen Baker, Cambridge Film Festival, said:

“It was a wonderful way to begin our 45th anniversary celebrations. Cambridge Film Festival has always been about more than what happens on screen. It is about the people, conversations and shared love of cinema that have kept the Festival alive for nearly five decades. Thank you to everyone who came along, supported the event and helped us start CFF45 in such a positive way.”

More CFF45 events coming soon

The quiz was only the beginning of our CFF45 anniversary year. More events, screenings and special announcements will follow over the coming months, leading up to the 45th Cambridge Film Festival from 22 October to 1 November 2026.
