Synopsis

From the director of Western comes this Cannes Jury Prize winner, a simmering thriller where the power struggle challenges the tight fist of the patriarchy. Set in rural Bulgaria, Valeska Grisebach's film puts its non-professional cast front and center, to untangle the web of violence gripping a small town. The local archaeologist Veska (a resplendent debut for former high school teacher Yana Radeva) is tasked with keeping the peace between opposing gangs, her even-keeled approach imprinted on the wrinkles of her chisled face. With the help of well and lesser meaning friends, she is set to unearth the past, its secrets and violent repressions.
