Rocks is a typical 15-year-old teenager living in East London with her family. She suffers through school with the help of a close group of friends. Until one day she returns home to find her mother gone. In order to avoid being taken by social services, Rocks decides to hide the fact that she and her little brother are now on their own.
Balancing the drama with a playful tone, Rocks was developed collaboratively with its young cast. Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age feature, which opened CFF39 in 2019, is a colourful ode to friendship and girlhood, and a touching tale of resilience.
