Synopsis

“Home is a privilege,” says Patrick (Anthony Boyle) to his friend Rian (Joe Cole) in a monologue central to Clio Barnard's mosaic portrait of friendship over time, encapsulating the message of I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning. We're excited to open CFF 45 with a film so polyphonic and brave, adapted from the acclaimed novel of the same name by Keiran Goddard. Barnard—who is also this year's recepient of CFF's Outstanding Contribution Award—follows up her Bradford Trilogy (Selfish Giant, The Arbor, and Ali and Ava) with a Birmigham-set narrative where five friends grow up and grow apart since their council housing home has been demolished. Joinng Patrick and Rian are Oli (Jay Lycurgo), Conor (Daryl McCormack), and Patrick's partner Shiv (Lola Petticrew), in the best British film of the year.
