What happens when religious norms contradict the social ones? This is the central question of Fjord, the Cannes Palme d'Or winner by Cristian Mungiu. . He cleverly puts our contemporary biases under the microscope with the help of Mihai (Sebastian Stan) and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve), and their five children. The Gheorghius have only just moved to a small Norwegian town, but the crystal-clear waters of the surrounding fjords conceal the murky reality of how easily polarised our society is. A micro-cosmos of its own, Fjord asks the viewer to take a stand, or the stand, in one crucial courtroom scene.
