The new offering from Oscar-winner Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida, Cold War) takes place in 1949, just as the novelist Thomas Mann returns to Germany from exile, having opposed Hitler’s regime. Fatherland unfolds over the few days of a roadtrip from West to East Germany at the height of the Cold War, Fatherland circles around Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his children Erika (Sandra Hüller) and Klaus (August Diehl) in a spectral reflection on art during wartime.
