Synopsis

Oscar winner Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car)'s first film made in France is based on a correspondence between two women – a philosopher and an anthropologist – exploring illness and the sudden deterioration of health. A fiction film nonetheless, All of a Sudden embodies the principles of care its protagonists Marie-Lou (Virginie Efira) and Mari (Tao Okamoto) explore in life and art, through storytelling techniques of the gentlest kind – conversations, peripatetic discussions, and mutual understanding. An utopian film perhaps, but one that urges us to care for each other in new, unexpected ways when life suddenly changes for the worse.
