Spotlight on Lois Weber (1879 – 1939)

With women directors still a comparative rarity in today’s film industry, it may come as a surprise that – more than 100 years ago – a woman called Lois Weber was one of Hollywood’s most prominent and highly paid directors. A gifted writer, director, producer and actress, Weber made more than 200 films in 23 years. Combining moving personal narratives with social critique, she was ahead of her time in so many ways. This small sample of Weber’s work showcases her range, skill and storytelling brilliance.
