Synopsis

Director: Jean-Pierre Melville.
Starring: Alain Delon, Yves Montand, Gian Maria Volonté.

One of the greatest heist movies ever made, Melville’s impeccably stylish thriller stars Alain Delon as a master thief who – together with an alcoholic ex-cop and an escaped criminal – plans a breathtakingly daring robbery at an upmarket Parisian jewellery store. Melville’s aim was to shoot a film noir in colour, and he creates a muted, murky world pervaded by existential gloom where the distinction between cops and villains is fatally blurred. With this screening of The Red Circle, CFF pays tribute to the great Jean-Pierre Melville in his centenary year. ‘Melville is celebrated as a poet of lowlife crime and a master of style, the creator of a Gallicised American tough-guy aesthetic taken from the 1930s Hollywood gangster movies that he adored.’ (Peter Bradshaw).
