Loosely inspired by Béla Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle, Solnicki’s extraordinary film revolves around the lives of several daughters of rich industrialists from Buenos Aires. On holiday in Punta de Este with their friends and lovers, through the pleasures and boredom Kékszakállú offers a very original and powerful portrait of anguish, solitude and a sense of entrapment in this seeming paradise. With a minimalist and elliptical approach, Solnicki superbly sets extracts of the staging of the opera alongside the life of his protagonists, opening it up to a myriad of interpretations that render the film the more mysterious.
