Synopsis

What happens when religious norms contradict the social ones? This is the central question of Fjord, the Cannes Palme d'Or winner by Cristian Mungiu. He cleverly puts our contemporary biases under the microscope with the help of Mihai (Sebastian Stan) and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve), and their five children. The Gheorghius have only just moved to a small Norwegian town, but the crystal-clear waters of the surrounding fjords conceal the murky reality of how easily polarised our society is. A micro-cosmos of its own, Fjord asks the viewer to take a stand, or the stand, in one crucial courtroom scene.
