Grantchester Meadows 2011

MOVIES ON GRANTCHESTER MEADOWS

Banner

Follow the River Cam out to Grantchester this August Bank Holiday weekend for another round of cinematic pleasures under the stars, with DIRTY DANCING and SOME LIKE IT HOT. The Meadows will remain serene as you will be issued with an individual FM receiver to listen to the film’s soundtrack through headphones instead of a conventional cinema sound system. Make sure you bring £5 cash as a refundable deposit so that we can issue you with the FM receiver as we create a ‘silent disco’ experience, allowing you to laugh, cry and sing along to the films as loudly as you like! Feel free to bring your own headphones if you can.

DirtyDancing

Saturday 27th August DIRTY DANCING (1987, 12A, 100 min)

A 1960’s family vacation at a summer resort makes the perfect backdrop for this holiday romance featuring the fresh-faced 17-year-old ‘Baby’ (Jennifer Grey) as she develops a crush on dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze). Have ‘the (night)time of your life’ with this coming of age story that has something for everyone to enjoy. Sizzling Swayze ensures that no one, not even Baby’s own family, puts Baby in the corner!

SLIH

Sunday 28th August SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959, PG, 120 min)

Follow the antics of musicians in crime Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) as they grace Florida’s shores in full drag in order to hide out from the Chicago Mafiosi, having witnessed the Saint Valentine’s Day massacre. These two pouting girlies find it hard to fight their basic Darwinian drives when dazzling-beauty-slash-ukulele-player Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) boards their getaway train in search of ‘the sweet end of the lollipop’. Director Billy Wilder lets imagination run wild as high-voiced and simpering ‘Josephine’ (Curtis) and ‘Daphne’ (Lemmon) plunge into a series of comic scenarios that include slapstick gangster chases and a marriage proposal garnered with arguably some of the best punch lines in screen comedy.

HOW TO GET THERE

Screenings will be on Spring Lane Field in Grantchester, near the Orchard Tea Gardens. The main access will be off Mill Way and will be signposted; it is close to the Orchard Tea Garden’s entrance (which is located at 45 – 47 Mill Way, Grantchester, Cambridge CB3 9ND).

By foot: You can access Spring Lane Field from the Meadows area, or from Grantchester village (via the high street/Mill Way). Bring a torch for the journey home, when it will be very dark!

By bicycle: As by foot. There will be limited bicycle racks but plenty of space for bikes otherwise. If coming from Cambridge city centre, you will come via Newnham to Grantchester. Make sure you have bike lights for the journey home.

By car: Whilst we recommend coming by foot, bicycle, or on the river, we will be providing a car parking area a few minutes walk from the main entrance, off Mill Way. It will be very dark when the film ends so we recommend bringing a torch to light your way back.

By river/punt: The river Cam runs through Spring Lane Field, and our giant airscreen will be inflated on the opposite bank. For chauffeured punts we recommend enquiring with Scudamore’s Punting Company.

USEFUL INFORMATION

It will be cold and dark when the events finish, so dress appropriately and make sure you bring a blanket and a brolly. Screenings will take place rain or shine, except in cases of severe weather where you will be eligible for a refund if we decide we cannot screen the film. There will be no smoking, no barbecues and no bonfires allowed on site. Well behaved dogs are allowed but will have to be removed if they disturb other customers. There are no cash machines or card facilities on site. Tickets can be purchased on the door, subject to availability, using cash, or by cheque with a guarantee card. Event capacity is 1,000 people.
