Next weekend is the 15th British Silent Film Festival (19-22 April 2012), a celebration of film previously at the Barbican Centre in London, now in Cambridge for the first time – and in the year of sweeping success for films like THE ARTIST and HUGO, which have served to remind us of our love for the Silent Film era!

This is our mini-guide to help you spend a great 4 days in Cambridge enjoying the world of silent film. [The Festival's website is: http://www.britishsilents.co.uk/silent/]

When & Where?

Most screenings take place at the 3-screen Cambridge Arts Picturehouse, in central Cambridge. (38-39 St Andrew’s Street, CB2 3AR)
Some events are elsewhere; venues include Emmanuel College (opposite the Arts Picturehouse), the West Road Concert Hall (10 minutes walk away over the river), and the Varsity Hotel (10 minutes walk, off Magdalene Street)

What to see – the big ones

The Ghost that never returns – Gala Screening accompanied by The Dodge Brothers

WHEN & WHERE? Sunday 22 Apr, 5.30pm at The West Road Concert Hall

WHY THIS EVENT? accompanied by Film Critic Mark Kermode’s ‘skiffle’ band THE DODGE BROTHERS, who we’ve been waiting to return to the Arts Picturehouse since they performed to an enraptured audience watching Beggars of Life at the 30th Cambridge Film Festival in 2010. See them in action at the BBC here.

WHY THIS FILM? A deadly game of cat and mouse across South America, THE GHOST… promises a mix of baited breath and fun.

The First Born – Gala Screening

WHEN & WHERE? Friday 20 Apr, 7.15pm at the Arts Picturehouse

WHY THIS EVENT? Not 1, not 2, but 3 musicians will be accompanying this gala screening, with numerous instruments, making for a rich, exciting soundtrack.

WHY THIS FILM? A tour de force of late silent filmmaking and a heady mix of politics, infidelity, sex and passion, recently restored by the BFI National Archive with its original delicate tinting.

Highlights of the British Silent Film Festival – Closing Event

WHEN & WHERE? Sunday 22 Apr, 8.30pm | Rooftop terrace of the Varsity Hotel

WHY? This selection of feature films, actualities, animations, comedies, local films, travelogues, nature and exploration films aims to inspire you to know more about the first 35 years of your film heritage. With live music, and at the luxury Varsity hotel near the historic Quayside Magdalene Bridge area.

A quick update on our 2011 successes as we look forward to CFF 2012.

Admissions up 20%!
2011′s Cambridge Film Festival didn’t disappoint, with a packed programme as usual, some fantastic guests, and even better, hundreds of new faces! We’re looking forward to improving further this year – any profit remaining after paying for staff, films, events and overheads goes straight into the budget for 2012.

Accolades for Festival Films
Complimenting the Programmers of the Cambridge Film Festival, several key features from this year’s Festival are continuing to achieve great success, with TINKER TAILOR SOLIDER SPY, DRIVE, THE HELP, TYRANNOSAUR, and MYSTERIES OF LISBON all up for awards from the London Critics’ Circle. This is after several of the above won awards at the British Independent Film Awards earlier last month. Directors Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor), Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive), and Paddy Considine (Tyrannosaur) all attended the 2011 Festival to speak to Cambridge audiences.
