Strands

Hold the Front Page! – a series of new films (PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES, TABLOID) and classic titles (ACE IN THE HOLE, CITIZEN KANE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN) exploring crusading journalists, mad media moguls and the dark underbelly of print media.

Tartan Films: a Tribute – celebrating the work of this groundbreaking distributor which brought a staggering array of international cinema to the UK – everything from Herzog, Bergman and Breillat to a wave of Asian horror (AUDITION, RING, THE EYE, DARK WATER). We’re also delighted to welcome Tartan’s maverick chief Hamish McAlpine, who will be in conversation with critic Peter Bradshaw.

Jos Stelling: A Dutch Master – a retrospective of startlingly original work by the idiosyncratic director, never before distributed in the UK.

Contemporary German Cinema – a selection of the latest feature and documentary titles, including BURNOUT, revealing private lives in multicultural Berlin, Baader-Meinhof drama IF NOT US, WHO?, nuclear power documentary UNDER CONTROL and gripping thriller THE SILENCE.

The Romanian New Wave – in the early 1990s, Romania was in a state of collapse, its film industry nonexistent. Now, it is flourishing. This selection of post-Ceaucescu features and shorts includes works by leading light of the New Wave, Cristi Puiu.

Family Film Festival – the enormously successful and uniquely family friendly series of programmes returns, this year including TINGA TINGA TALES, OCTONAUTS, LION KING, THE GRUFFALO and many more.

Shortfusion – This year has seen more films submitted to the Festival than ever. We present an eclectic range of themed programmes showcasing up-and-coming filmmaking talent from around the world. Programmes include: LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX, WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME, WOUNDS AND SCARS, LOVE LOST AND FOUND, MAD WORLD and DILATING TIME. We also welcome programmes of shorts from Disposable Cinema, Artists’ Moving Image, EM Media and Tridentfest – plus a special Festival selection by the internationally acclaimed Zagreb School of Animation.
