OPENING FILM
Woody Allen's TO ROME WITH LOVE is a kaleidoscopic comedy movie set in one of the world's most enchanting cities. In it, we meet a well-known American architect reliving his youth, an average middle-class Roman who suddenly finds himself Rome's biggest celebrity, a young provincial couple drawn into separate romantic encounters and an American opera director endeavouring to put a singing mortician on stage. Their stories explore the eternal quest for love and sex in its many variations, from a betrothal and a honeymoon through to assorted acts of infidelity; from tender lovemaking to more spontaneous liaisons; from the absurd and ridiculous to the poignant and profound; from the exhilaration of newfound love all the way to heartbreak and its aftermath. With the writer-director also back in front of the camera, this is the kind of movie that Allen made his own: a paean to a great city with his own wry take on the nature of relationships.

A charming and chaotic mix of stories on love, infidelity, the madness of fame, and men singing in showers. The film was an enjoyable romp, at times surreal and ridiculous. I felt the most enjoyable moments were watching Alec Baldwin act the sly narrator to the seduction of Jessie Eisenberg's young architect, and watching the fabulous Roberto Benigni entertain the audience as a hapless white-collar worker caught up in the meaninglessness of fame.
Enjoyable fare, but not as satisfying a film as Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
