When Kathy Huang first learned of the Indonesian waria – biological men who identify as women – she was amazed to discover that a transgender community could exist so visibly in the world’s largest Muslim country. She travelled to Indonesia to hear their stories first hand, and discovered a world full of contradictions, tragedy and heroism. The waria willingly collaborated with Huang on this unprecedented glimpse into a little-known but remarkable community.
