"In the old days, the local copper would tap on the window if a girl was showing too much ankle, now the girls deal coke from their cubicles." Louise and Martine Fokkens are identical twins. For over fifty years they were working as prostitutes. They freed themselves from the control of their pimps, ran their own brothel, and set up the first informal trade union for prostitutes. They are familiar faces in Amsterdam's Red Light District, but soon they will bid their farewells. MEET THE FOKKENS is a portrait of these remarkable women.
“Despite its content, or more likely in a deliberate attempt at irreverence, the film is absolutely charming and presented almost like a piece of 60’s French cinema. The non-diegetic music is full of accordions and clarinets, the cinematography is whimsical and colourful and the overall message is one of enjoying the particulate experience of life.” – Sound on Sight

Meet the Fokkens is a whimsically odd look at a wonderfully odd couple. This impressively even handed and nonjudgmental look at 2 sisters and their part in Amsterdams red light district over 50 years, is a little treasure of this years Cambridge Film Festival.
Full of contradictions, not least in the sisters own attitudes towards their profession, and their former pimps (both of which they seem at the same time to wish to leave behind and to genuinely love.) Meet the Fokkens takes us on a journey which is sometimes sad, maybe even depressing but also full of joyous moments, always ably guided by the wonderfully irrepressible Fokken sisters, their brilliant dog and their AMAZING laughter.
