Call Me Kuchu 2012

  • Country Uganda
  • Production Year 2012
  • Language English
  • Duration 87 minutes

“If we keep on hiding, they will say we’re not here,” states activist, and Uganda’s first openly gay man, David Kato. Facing the impossible, he fights Uganda’s government and media in the courts and at the United Nations to repeal the country’s homophobic laws, and to liberate his fellow homosexual men and women, or 'kuchus'. Kato works with the few who dare to protest against an upcoming 'Anti-Homosexuality Bill', which will further ignite the ongoing witch-hunt to out the kuchus across the country. Not just an important chronicle of the victimisation of many and the courage of one man, but also the heartbreaking, deeply personal story of Kato and the Kampala kuchus, as they strive to change their fate and that of other kuchus around Africa.
