A Cube Of Sugar 2011

  • Country Iran
  • Production Year 2011
  • Language Farsi with English subtitles
  • Duration 116 minutes

In A CUBE OF SUGAR, three generations come together to celebrate the wedding of young Pasandide, portrayed by a vibrant Negar Javaherian (winner of Best Actress at last year’s Fajr International Film Festival). Spanning the two days before the union, there is plenty of opportunity for familial frictions and affections to colour the atmosphere. Old Uncle Ezzatolah (Saeed Poursamimi) hosts the reunion in his beautiful and dilapidated home, where Mir-Karimi’s painstaking compositions are complemented perfectly by Mohammad Reza Aligholi’s voluptuous score. Mir-Karimi’s experience in graphic design is evident in his instinctive and indulgent use of light and colour as a sweet backdrop to the light, tight script. Not just a chick flick, A CUBE OF SUGAR is a gently thought-provoking portrait of Iranian tradition and family life.
