One of the most shocking and unsettling films of the 1990s from director Michael Haneke (THE PIANO TEACHER, HIDDEN (CACHÉ)), FUNNY GAMES is an immensely powerful and brilliantly handled examination of the nature of screen violence. The story is frighteningly simple and plausible: a family at their country weekend home welcome two of their neighbours' guests into their home only to find themselves held hostage by the dispassionate, violent young men. Harrowing, disturbing and truly challenging, FUNNY GAMES is also admirably non-exploitative, drawing audiences into the action, making them complicit in what is happening and forcing them to confront their own attitudes to screen violence. German and French with English subtitles.
