Set in the dark underbelly of modern-day Germany, THE DISPENSABLES tells the true story of 11 year-old Jacob, and his survival after discovering the body of his abusive father - a fact he tries to cover up for fear of being sent to an orphanage. With a narrative that twists and turns and jumps seamlessly between time periods, this is a beautifully crafted, highly atmospheric film; intense and interesting characters bloom to life around Jacob, as his childhood slowly disappears. At times brutal and unsettling, then tender and heartfelt, what emerges is the deep emotional turmoil of a family caught within a life of poverty, alcoholism and misplaced illusions of a better future.
