Promise and Unrest
DOCUMENTARIES
Ireland/Philippines, 2010.
95 mins. English/Tagalog with English subtitles.
Find out just how far one woman will go to improve the life of her family in this gut-wrenchingly powerful documentary. Shot over the course of five years it is the story of Noemi Barredo who leaves her daughter, her large family and her home in the Philippines in search of the means to provide for them all. First she travels to Malaysia and then on to Ireland in search of work and the means to make a better life for her family. As you would expect from two co-directors who are both experts in contemporary migratory issues, visual media studies and ethnographic methods of research, this is an intricate, intimate portrait sensitively and intelligently told which tells of heartbreaking maternal sacrifice, loss and love.
