Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer. Starring: Henrik Malberg, Emil Hass Christiansen, Preben Lerdoff Rye.
Denmark, 1955. 126 mins. Danish with English subtitles.
Set in a religious farming community in West Jutland, this challenging, brilliant film provides a masterful study in family and faith. Devoted Christian Morten (Malberg) struggles to come to terms with the disparate beliefs of his three sons: Mikkel (Christensen) is an atheist, Anders wants to marry the daughter of a fundamentalist, and Johannes (Rye) has gone mad due to reading too much Kierkegaard and believes himself to be Jesus of Nazareth. Familial tensions come to a head when Mikkel’s wife Inger is critically ill following a stillbirth, leading to an astonishing climax which compels the viewer to re-examine preconceptions about the nature of life, death, and spirituality. Consistently surprising, utterly engaging and totally unlike anything you will have seen before.
