O Lucky Man
Director: Lindsay Anderson.
Starring: Malcolm McDonald, Ralph Richardson, Rachel Roberts.
United Kingdom, 1973.
174 mins. English
Released five years after Lindsay Anderson’s landmark social satire IF..., O LUCKY MAN! marked a second collaboration with both that film’s cinematographer, Miroslav Ondrˇícˇek, as well as its star Malcolm McDowell, who also turned his hand to writing the story. Mick Travis (McDowell) is a coffee salesman, who learns to abandon his principles in order to succeed and is soon rewarded as he comes to work for an amoral industrialist (Richardson). Gloriously surreal, many cast members play multiple roles. The film, which features songs by Alan Price, is darkly comic and every bit as riotously anti-establishment as its predecessor, acting as a critique of post-colonial Britain, capitalism, fame and the Vietnam War.
