Masks of Mer
CAMBRIDGESHIRE FILM CONSORTIUM
UK, 2010.
40 mins.
When Alfred Haddon, historically associated with Cambridge University's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, led the 1898 Cambridge University Expedition to the Torres Strait islands, he shot a film which, although less than a minute long, is the world's first example of anthropological cinema. In the documentary, THE MASKS OF MER, director Michael Eaton traces the extraordinary story of Haddon's largely neglected footage, which raises vital questions of authenticity and reconstruction, and experiments with reproducing Haddon's film version for public presentations, synchronised to the original phonographic recordings.
