/ UK PREMIERE

USA/China/Australia/UK, 2010.

Beijing Punk (85 mins)
Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to ride shotgun with a Chinese skinhead swigging cough medicine round the mean streets of Beijing! Roll back to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 to dredge up the underground punk scene. Ozzie filmmaker Shaun Jefford rocks up in town to investigate reports of one loud outlet of dissatisfaction upon China’s rapid economic growth and self-realisation as the 21st century global superpower. He exposes a side of China almost never seen on film from the backstreet clubs where the sound is raw to extremely frank views on life in an authoritarian state. The film’s tagline asks “What happens when 1.3 billion Chinese discover punk?”. Compared to our punks of the late 1970s these guys have serious issues.
SHOWING WITH: KISS BILL
Director: Emelie Wallgren, Ina Holmqvist.
Sweden 2010. 28 mins.
With the passionate kind of crush that only 14-year-olds can muster, Angela and Arina seek out their German pop idol Bill Kaulitz in this film about friendship, infatuation and the heartbreak of growing up.
