The Last Days of Shishmaref
DOCUMENTARIES / UK PREMIERE
Starring: Jan Louter.
Netherlands, 2008.
93 mins. English and Inuit with English subtitles.
Shishmaref is the one and only settlement on Sarichef, an island just south of the Arctic circle in Alaska, home to a small community of Inupiaq. Whilst they have traditionally lived a sustainable life, the population is declining, and coastal erosion and rising sea levels due to global warming threaten the very existence of their home. Experts predict Shishmaref will be gone in less than a decade. The Inupiaq now face the monumental decision of whether to move to the mainland, abandoning their traditions and ancestors.
