Jean-Pierre Melville became famous in 1946 for adapting to the screen Le Silence de la Mer, a wartime novel dealing with the French resistance. What is less well-known is that Melville himself spent eight years of his life as a soldier in the French army and the Free French Forces. Combining interviews of filmmakers, actors, friends and relatives
of Jean-Pierre Melville with rare archival footage and film extracts, CODENAME MELVILLE shows how the directors works were inluenced by his war experiences, and how these affected his whole approach to cinema – its themes and its aesthetics.
