Often considered to be the greatest film of the silent era, Friedrich Murnau’s classic tells the story of a proud hotel worker whose life is shattered when his attempts at concealing his demotion from doorman to washroom attendant are discovered. Technically stunning (the film is one of the first to use a moving camera) and emotionally complex despite the simplicity of the story, the film is an embodiment of the German Expression movement of the 1920s.
